Spot treatment watering

by John Robert on April 09, 2021

Watering your lawn is an essential part of keeping your lawn healthy, green and thriving.  Whether you have the luxury of built in irrigation or not, inevitably there will be spots where the lawn needs an extra drink of water.  By spot treating these problem areas with your garden hose, you bring back the uniform green look without spending too much time or money on full lawn watering.

The areas that need spot treatment are generally very easy to see.  Yellow grass and thin blades are the sign to look for.  Often these areas are in high sun areas, areas missed by irrigation or protected from rain or areas that have a thin layer of healthy on a base of rock.  Adding more soil to those areas will also help, but the short term solution is to get your hose out and water heavily.

Water these areas with the hose setting on full, giving them a deep soak.  If these areas are as dry as they look, they will absorb this water without puddling. A deep soak infrequently is ideal to get these areas back to health.  Frequent and shallow watering will discourage root growth.  Give these spots a thorough soaking once a week for a month and then keep an eye on them the rest of the season.
