Organic fertilization

by John Robert on April 09, 2021

Everyone knows that for a lawn to thrive you have to feed it.  Feralization is a critical process to ensure that your lawn has the nutrients it needs for strong, healthy, deep green grass.  The biggest question is whether or not this can be achieved with organic fertilizer.  And the short answer is yes.

Traditional fertilizer definitely works.  A healthy dose of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium can quickly bring a yellow lawn back to deep green in a short matter of time.  While we are not against traditional fertilizers, they do have downsides.  Overexposing your children, pets, wildlife and water systems can cause problems.  And while traditional fertilizers are great at providing growth of the grass blade, that comes at the expense of root growth.  And healthy roots and healthy soil are foundational elements for growing a healthy lawn.

Organic fertilizer can be a great solution to these problems.  There are many types of organic fertilizer, but our preferred type is organic fish emulsion concentrate.  Filled with vitamins, microbes, amino acids and enzymes, fish emulsion is packed with the things your lawn needs to thrive.  It comes in liquid format and you can apply with a hose end sprayer or a pump sprayer. The levels of Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are much lower than traditional fertilizers, so the risk of burning your lawn is very low. And there is no "slow release" options.  So the frequency of application does need to be higher than traditional fertilizer.  But for a true lawn enthusiast, that just provides more opportunity to get out there and work on your lawn. We generally apply fish emulsion about once a month from spring to fall, giving us a full season of thriving grass.  Plus, with fish emulsion, you get the added benefit of making your neighborhood smell like a fish market:)
